Biography

“Dr. Akhil Sunil is a Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon with specialized expertise in Endoscopic Brain and Spine Surgery. Passionate about treating disorders of the brain, spine, and nervous system, he is dedicated to providing advanced, evidence-based neurosurgical care with a strong emphasis on minimally invasive techniques that promote faster recovery and improved patient outcomes.

Dr. Akhil developed a deep interest in the complexities of the human nervous system during his MBBS training at Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram. Driven by his passion for the surgical sciences, he pursued the prestigious DrNB in Neurosurgery, a rigorous six-year super-specialty training programme, at the renowned Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, Bengaluru. During his training at this internationally respected tertiary care centre, Dr. Akhil gained extensive exposure to complex neurosurgical conditions and was actively involved in more than 1,500 brain and spine surgeries. This comprehensive experience enabled him to develop expertise in the management of a wide range of cranial and spinal disorders, with particular proficiency in minimally invasive and endoscopic brain and spine surgery.

His commitment to continuous learning extends beyond clinical medicine. Recognizing the importance of healthcare leadership and quality management, Dr. Akhil also earned an MBA in Hospital and Health Systems Management from BITS Pilani, equipping him with additional expertise in healthcare administration and systems improvement. Following completion of his super-specialty training, Dr. Akhil continued at his alma mater for a year, independently performing complex neurosurgical procedures while further refining his clinical and surgical skills. In 2022, he returned to his hometown of Kollam, where he worked at a reputed private hospital for nearly one and a half years before joining Travancore Medical College Hospital in late 2023.

Dr. Akhil has a special interest in endoscopic brain surgery, minimally invasive spine surgery, brain tumours, spinal disorders, traumatic brain and spine injuries, hydrocephalus, and cerebrovascular diseases. He believes in combining advanced surgical technology with compassionate, patient-centered care, ensuring that every patient receives individualized treatment based on the latest evidence and international standards.
