Biography

Dr Hanzel is a highly experienced emergency medicine specialist with 13 years of hands-on expertise in managing critically ill and trauma patients across diverse clinical and disaster settings. He currently serves as senior resident in emergency medicine at Travancore Medicity, where he is recognised for his clinical acumen, leadership in the emergency system and commitment to patient-centred care. His core strengths include trauma resuscitation, advanced airway management, critical care stabilisation, and emergency system development. Dr Hanzel has trained and worked at reputed institutions, including ASTER CMI Hospital, Bangalore, and Vadakara Co-operative Hospital, gaining extensive exposure to high-volume emergency departments and complex emergencies. Dr Hanzel has played an active role in disaster preparedness and response, including participation in multiple large-scale mock drills. These include the Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) Emergency Response Preparedness drill in 2018 as part of Civil Defence Division No. 22, and the tsunami mock drill conducted at the Trivandrum seaport in 2013 under the General Hospital Disaster Management Program. In 2021, he successfully established a fully functional, protocol-driven 23-bedded emergency department at Vadakara Co-operative Hospital, significantly strengthening emergency care delivery in the region. He also played a pivotal leadership role in forming the hospital infection control team and code blue team, conducting a structured training program that led to measurable improvements in patient outcomes between 2021 and 2024. Committed to capacity building, Dr Hanzel designed and led a comprehensive nursing emergency medical services (EMS) training program for two consecutive years (2022-2024), including curriculum development to enhance front-line emergency response efficiency. Additionally, he has organised and conducted basic life support (BLS) training for over 850 hospital staff and members of public organisations, significantly improving emergency preparedness at both hospital and community levels. He also played a key role in planning and executing emergency response strategies during the Wayanad landslide disaster, and actively contributed to public health response measures during the COVID-19 pandemic and Nipah virus outbreak in 2023, reinforcing infection control, triage, and emergency preparedness systems. Dr Hanzel remains deeply committed to advancing emergency medicine through protocol -based care, continuous training, disaster readiness, and compassionate leadership, with the overarching goal of saving lives when it matters most.
