Biography

Dr. Hanzel is a highly experienced Emergency Medicine Specialist with over 13 years of hands-on experience in managing critically ill, trauma, and emergency patients across high-acuity clinical and disaster settings. He currently serves as a Senior Resident in Emergency Medicine at Travancore Medical College Hospital, where he is recognized for his clinical expertise, leadership in emergency systems, and unwavering commitment to patient-centered care.

Dr. Hanzel’s core areas of expertise include trauma resuscitation, advanced airway management, critical care stabilization, emergency ultrasound, disaster medicine, and emergency department system development. He has trained and worked at renowned institutions, including Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru, and Vadakara Co-operative Hospital, gaining extensive experience in managing high-volume emergency departments and complex medical and surgical emergencies. A strong advocate for emergency preparedness, Dr. Hanzel has actively participated in several large-scale disaster preparedness and response initiatives. He was a key participant in the Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) Emergency Response Preparedness Drill in 2018 as part of the Civil Defence Division No. 22. Earlier, he participated in the Tsunami Mock Drill conducted at the Thiruvananthapuram Seaport in 2013 under the General Hospital Disaster Management Programme, strengthening his expertise in disaster response and mass casualty management.

In 2021, Dr. Hanzel successfully established a fully functional, protocol-driven 23-bed Emergency Department at Vadakara Co-operative Hospital, significantly enhancing emergency care delivery in the region. During his tenure, he also played a pivotal leadership role in establishing the hospital’s Infection Control Team and Code Blue Team, implementing structured training programmes that contributed to measurable improvements in patient outcomes between 2021 and 2024. Passionate about capacity building and emergency education, Dr. Hanzel designed and led a comprehensive Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Training Programme for Nursing Staff over two consecutive years (2022–2024), including curriculum development aimed at strengthening frontline emergency response capabilities. He has also organized and conducted Basic Life Support (BLS) training for more than 850 healthcare professionals and members of the public, significantly improving emergency preparedness at both institutional and community levels. Beyond hospital-based emergency care, Dr. Hanzel has played an active role in major public health emergencies. He contributed to the planning and execution of emergency response strategies during the Wayanad landslide disaster and actively supported healthcare responses during the COVID-19 pandemic and the Nipah virus outbreak in 2023, reinforcing infection control protocols, triage systems, and emergency preparedness measures.
