Biography

Dr. Joseph Francis is a distinguished Professor and Chief Consultant in General Surgery with an exceptional career spanning 45 years of clinical experience, including 26 years of dedicated surgical practice. A former Chief Consultant Surgeon with the Government of Kerala, he is widely respected for his significant contributions to minimally invasive surgery, vascular surgery, and colorectal surgery.

Dr. Joseph received advanced training in laparoscopic surgery from the Indian Institute of Laparoscopic Surgery in 2001, marking the beginning of his notable contributions to the advancement of minimally invasive surgery in Kerala’s public healthcare sector. Throughout his illustrious career, he has introduced several landmark surgical innovations.

In 2002, Dr. Joseph performed the first laparoscopic appendicectomy in the Government sector. In 2009, he pioneered the introduction of stapled haemorrhoid surgery (stapler surgery for piles) in the Government sector. In 2010, he established the first Laparoscopic Surgery Unit in the Government sector at District Hospital, Kollam, significantly expanding access to advanced surgical care.

Dr. Joseph has also made valuable academic and clinical contributions through the development and publication of innovative surgical techniques. His work includes techniques for painless varicose vein surgery, modifications in hernia surgery to reduce post operative oedema, and advanced methods for repairing large abdominal wall defects. These innovations reflect his commitment to improving surgical outcomes, reducing postoperative discomfort, and enhancing patient recovery.

Continuing his tradition of surgical innovation, Dr. Joseph introduced laser surgery for piles for the first time in Kollam at Travancore Medical College Hospital, bringing advanced and minimally invasive treatment options to patients in the region. He has also introduced and performs Chivate’s procedure (sutured recto-haemorrhoidopexy), a minimally invasive and relatively painless procedure for the treatment of haemorrhoids. In addition, he performs no-scalpel sphincterotomy, further reflecting his expertise in minimally invasive colorectal procedures.
