Biography

“Dr. Sheelamoni A. is a distinguished Professor Emeritus and one of Kerala’s most experienced Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, with over 43 years of clinical experience in the management of complex obstetric and gynaecological conditions. Throughout her illustrious career, she has earned widespread recognition for her clinical expertise, academic leadership, and unwavering commitment to women’s healthcare.

Dr. Sheelamoni has extensive experience in the management of high-risk pregnancies, complex gynaecological disorders, and advanced obstetric care. Her expertise encompasses both medical management and a broad range of open and laparoscopic gynaecological surgical procedures, enabling her to provide comprehensive, evidence-based care tailored to each patient’s individual needs.

Prior to joining Travancore Medical College Hospital, Dr. Sheelamoni served in several Government Medical Colleges across Kerala, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam, Thrissur, and Alappuzha, where she dedicated nearly 20 years to patient care, medical education, and academic leadership. She also served as a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with the Ministry of Health, Abu Dhabi, for six years, gaining valuable international clinical experience.

Dr. Sheelamoni retired as Professor and Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology from Government Medical College, Alappuzha, in 2008, following a distinguished academic career. In the same year, she joined Travancore Medical College Hospital as Professor, where she continued to contribute significantly to patient care, postgraduate teaching, and departmental development for the next 18 years as professor of HOD.
Following her retirement from active academic service in 2023, Dr. Sheelamoni was conferred the title of Professor Emeritus in recognition of her exceptional contributions to medical education and women’s healthcare. She continues her association with Travancore Medical College Hospital, providing expert clinical care while mentoring the next generation of obstetricians and gynaecologists.

Known for her compassionate approach, meticulous clinical judgment, and commitment to ethical, evidence-based practice, Dr. Sheelamoni remains dedicated to improving the health and well-being of women through comprehensive, patient-centered care. Her decades of experience, combined with her passion for teaching and lifelong learning, have earned her the respect of patients, colleagues, and the wider medical community.

As part of World Sight Day observance, a quiz competition and a poster designing competition were conducted to promote awareness about eye health and the importance of vision care. The activities encouraged participants to enhance their knowledge of eye health and express their understanding through creative ideas.

Kollam: Travancore Medical College hosted “TMC MSK – From Imaging to Intervention” on October 3–4, attracting 97 delegates. Quilon Trust Secretary Shri. A. Abdul Salam inaugurated the workshop, emphasising radiology’s vital role in clinical practice. Sessions highlighted ultrasound as a rapid, accessible and affordable tool for assessing the shoulder, elbow and ankle and guiding interventions.

Programme Coordinator Dr. Ramesh S. Shenoy, Dr. Amel Antony, Lt. Col. Balachandran Nair and Academic Coordinator Dr. Jinu, together with other faculty members, conducted the sessions. Dr. Judy Mary Kurian, Head of the Department of Radiodiagnosis and Kerala IRIA State Secretary, served as Organising Chairperson, while Dr. Hijas Mukthar, Interventional Radiologist, served as Organising Secretary.

Kollam, September 20, 2026: SIG Aesthetics CME 2026, themed “Face Forward – The Future of Aesthetic Injection,” was conducted at Travancore Medicity, Kollam, under the aegis of IADVL, IADVL Academy and IADVL Derma Club Kollam.

The academic programme focused on recent advances in aesthetic injectable procedures, covering applied facial anatomy, botulinum toxin treatment strategies, filler selection and rheology, risk zones and complications, and midface rejuvenation.

An expert panel discussion on “When Aesthetic Injections Go Wrong – Recognition, Rescue & Prevention” provided an interactive platform for discussing complications and their management. The programme concluded with a hands-on workshop on anatomy, assessment and injection strategy, offering participants practical exposure to contemporary approaches in aesthetic medicine.

The CME brought together experts and delegates for an engaging academic exchange, with emphasis on safe, systematic and patient-centred aesthetic practice.

Travancore Medicity is organising an In-House Blood Donation Campaign for staff and students on the occasion of National Voluntary Blood Donation Day.

The campaign aims to encourage voluntary blood donation and create awareness about the importance of maintaining an adequate blood supply for patients in need.

The Department of Nursing organised a Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) Programme focused on enhancing professional knowledge and promoting safe, quality patient care. The programme provided an opportunity for nursing professionals to strengthen their clinical knowledge and skills through continued learning and professional development.

A learning and guidance session was conducted for the students of Bishop M.M.S.P. High School, Sasthamkotta, led by Dr. Meera R., Developmental Pediatrician, and Roshini Muhammad Kunju, Special Educator.

The Department of Pediatrics, Travancore Medicity, in association with IAP Kollam, conducted a Postgraduate Clinical Workshop aimed at enhancing the clinical knowledge and practical skills of postgraduate medical professionals

The Department of Plastic Surgery, Travancore Medicity, organized an In-House Workshop on Basic Suturing & Knotting Techniques Workshop on 22–23 July 2026, aimed at enhancing the surgical skills of young medical professionals.

A dedicated session on the assessment and management of trauma cases commonly encountered in plastic surgery further enriched the learning experience. The workshop provided participants with valuable practical exposure and reinforced the importance of precision, technique, and confidence in surgical procedures.

As part of the World Breastfeeding Week initiatives, Mother-Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative at Travancore Medicity successfully hosted an inspiring awareness program to promote and support breastfeeding. The event featured an engaging quiz competition conducted by MBFHI and an informative presentation by nursing students, highlighting the vital importance of early and exclusive breastfeeding for infant health. Through interactive student sessions and expert guidance, the program raised awareness on proper maternal care and infant nutrition, reaffirming our commitment to building a healthy foundation for every child.
