Psychiatry as we know is a branch of medicine dealing with brain disorder which is to be treated at par with any other medical illness. Qualitative and quantitative changes in the various neurotransmitters in the brain are the cause of psychiatric disorders. In many of the cases patients with bodily disease can also manifest with features of psychological / psychiatric disorders. Substance abuse including alcoholism has to be treated as disease due to functional defects in the brain. We, Travancore Medical College being a tertiary care centre offer equal importance for the psychological and physical well-being of the patient through a comprehensive approach. We are providing effective pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. We provide regular OP services and IP care for these patients. Emergency cases are also attended in the casualty on an on-call basis. In short, we are providing round the clock support and care to patients with mental illness.
